***ONES TO WATCH***

Chew Lips are a weird sort of band, well for me at least. I just can't put my finger on them. Band members Tigs, Will and James push their songs forward into another dimension with strained vocals (I mean that as a compliment) and soaring keyboards.

The riff lover in me is slightly miffed that this riot grrrl is in love with what is essentially an electro band but times change and this is a perfect time to go with the flow respectfully instead of jumping on the Little Boots bandwagon (she was boring in Dead Disco and is boring now).

Anyway to give you a little taster of their best work here is their best song 'Solo'.

Their new single Solo, with exclusive remixes, is avaliable to purchase from Kitsune and to download from most download providers.

Chew Lips begin a UK tour supporting wannabe rockstars The Virgins. For more info go to www.myspace.com/chewlips

*SONG OF THE MONTH*

The song of the month is The Beer by Kimya Dawson.

Lately I've been listening to this song on repeat cuz I just can't get over how good it is. For ages I couldn't work out exactly what it is that I love about it but I think I know now.

Darker than most of Dawson's uplifting ditties, 'The Beer' tackles her emotions at the worst time in her life.

The lyrics are even more inportant than ever in this song.

My favourites are:

"I ate every single one without noticing the mold you said you're gross my darling, I said no I'm rock and roll
The christians gave me comic books as if I would be
scared of burning in hell well I was already there

You can be a teenager for your whole fucking life
just find some pretty sucker and make that bitch your wife

First I cried for him and then I cried for me
haunted by the ghost of the girl I used to be
"

Here's a live version of 'The Beer' at Antifolk #2, Mains D'oeuvres in 2002 and a another version below.

*SONG OF THE MONTH*

Welcome to the first song of the month on Don't Dance Her Down Boys. From now on every month we will choose a song of the month. This song may reflect the thoughts and feelings of the nation, the major issues occurring at that time or it might just be my own personal choice.

This month's song is the latter since I have been listening to the Pixies non-stop since I got round to unearthing their albums a few months ago. They have so many amazing songs that I could write a whole blog devoted to how amazing the Pixies are but I won't, I kinda want to be a bit more diverse than that.

There are so many reasons I love this song, the simple but effective bass line, Frank Black's high pitched vocals that open the track, the idea of having a big BIG love.

The main reason I love this song are Kim Deal's vocals. She brings a new dimension to the song. There are no strikingly powerful vocals or whitney-esque warbles. Deal coyly sings about love in a way the divas just never could.

Deal's simplistic vocals appeal way more to men and women then anyone ever could. The song sounds like something you would write about your first boyfriend to impress him and that's what makes it so realistic.

If I ever fall in love this will be playing in the background the moment I realise. What...I live my life in a Meg Ryan Chick Flick, well doesn't everyone from time to time.
And this I know
His teeth as white as snow
What a gas it was to see him
Walk her every day
Into a shady place
With her lips she said she said

Hey Paul, Hey Paul, Hey Paul, let's have a ball [3x]

Gigantic, gigantic, gigantic
A big big love
Gigantic, gigantic, gigantic
A big big love

Lovely legs they are
What a big black mess
What a hunk of love
Walk her every day into a shady place
He's like the dark, but I'd want him

Hey Paul, Hey Paul, Hey Paul, let's have a ball [3x]

Gigantic, gigantic, gigantic
A big big love
Gigantic, gigantic, gigantic
A big big love

Gigantic, gigantic, gigantic
A big big love
Gigantic, gigantic, gigantic
A big big love
