Riot Grrrl New York Documentary

Riot Grrrl certainly coming back with avengance. If you thought the return of Julie Ruin and a Kathleen Hanna documentary in the works is mind blowing you'll love this snippet of the the riot grrrl scene in the early 90s.

Grrrl Love and the Revolution: Riot Grrrl NYC, released in 2010, documents the feminist music movement Riot Grrrl in New York from 1993 to 1996 through the eyes of documentary maker and Riot Grrrl participant Abby Moser.

The film features interview with musicians, including Kathleen Hanna, and Riot Grrrls themselves discussing what the movement means to them and why it matters.

After the film's release it had limited screenings and there is now little information available regarding whether  the film is still being screened or available to buy on DVD.

'A Woman Picking Up A Guitar Is A Radical Act'

Radical Act is a documentary film made way back in 1995 by film maker Tex Clark. Although it was made 15 years ago it has only just seen the light of day thanks to Million Movies A Minute.

Featuring interviews with Kathleen Hanna, Gretchen Phillips, Melissa York and Toshi Reagon to name a few Radical Act explores how sexual and gender identity impacted and informed the work of female musicians.

You can download the movie via YouTube or do it the old fashioned way and order the dvd either way you have to see it.

Wanna Join A Riot Grrrl Band....

Ok so this post is purely personal but it is related to female musicians as I've started a riot grrrl band. I responded to an callout for riot grrrl loving girls who wanted to start a band.

We originally formed so we could enter the Just a Girl competition but we were too late. Now a month later we've jammed, talked and already wrote two songs together.

Hey Where'd All The Angry Girls Go?

You've probably already read this by now but in case you haven't Jude Rogers has written a great piece in the Guardian that focuses on the demise of the 'angry woman' in rock.

In her quest to find an answer to her question she speaks to some greats including Joan Jett and Kathleen Hanna.

Whether you agree with the idea of the 'angry woman' or not, it's hard not to admit that what was once indie and challenging is now mainstream and big business.

As a result indie starlets are becoming more homogenised. 8 out of 10 girls in band have the same pretty doe-eyed look.

Girl Germs Anti-Valentine Night

Girl Germs are a bi-monthly club night that caters to the never ending thirst that we all have for a bit of riot grrrl noise.

This Saturday will see an anti-valentine's theme with heartbreak tunes, broken heart cookies and zines.

An extra added bonus is that I'll be djing on the night, bringing my own take on the classic heartbreak tracks.

BOOK REVIEW: Riot Grrrl & I by Jade French

Hi I've been meaning to post this review for a while but I've just got so distracted with everything that I've just delayed it and delayed it and now I definitely have to post it.

The Nottingham Trent Photography student, Jade French has gone beyond the usual expectations of a girl writing about riot grrrl. A simple thrown together zine would have sufficed but not for this girl. Jade decided to make a book documenting her and other girls experiences with riot grrrl and how the movement has developed.

First of all I have to say I love the idea for the book. Lately there has been many books, magazine features, column inches and zines dedicated to the memory of riot grrrl. While those interested in riot grrrl want to learn about it's history it is also important to document what we are doing now for ourselves and girls in the future.

The book does not deviate too far from the riot grrrl diy ethic and is presented in a scrapbook/ diary format. It includes sections on Ladyfest London, Ladyfest Manchester, an interview with feminist Red Chidgey, pictures of those who call themselves riot grrrls and an interview with Jade herself which must have been either quite hard or ridiculously easy to do.

I loved the riot grrrl portraits. There are so many pictures of riot grrrls of all genders, ethnicity's and looks, none of which fit into the stereotype of what a feminist or riot grrrl look like. It's really quite inspiring to see all those faces. It reminds you that even when you feel like your alone in your thoughts and beliefs there are thousands of people who are just like you.

The only negative about the book is that it is far too short. I finished it in one sitting. This is probably down to lack of funding and resources to be able to document everything that's going on in the movement today.

If we all pull together we make a even bigger document of our history for everyone to enjoy.

Everett True on the myths of Riot Grrrl

Ok I'm late on this one too, like PJ Harvey but I just found this article by riot grrrl lover, music journo and 90s scenester Everett True about the myths surrounding Riot Grrrl.

Now the article does not really clear up as many myths are it says and it kinda makes some up as it goes along, when did anyone question whether there was only one version of history or not?

Whether you like True or not, the piece is informative and interesting on a subject we always crave more on from a journo who was there when it all kicked off.

**SONG OF THE MONTH**

I have only just got into Courtney Love's 90s grunge riot grrrl band Hole but I love them already. Despite Courtney's many downfalls, she's had a lot over the years, you can't argue with her song writing prowess. Live Through This is a masterpiece. It manages to embody all of the primal rage of a young woman without sounding forced. Just listen to Jennifer's Body or Miss World and you'll know what i'm talking about. I've heard the rumours that Kurt Cobain actually wrote the album and Courtney had nothing to do with it but if you actually listened to the album you could tell Kurt had nothing to do with it. Only a woman could write that deeply about the female experience.

As good as Live Through This is the song of the month is not actually from that album. The Song of the Month is Best Sunday Dress which was written way back when Courtney was hanging round with Kat Bjelland of Babes In Toyland but only released years later as a b-side, of all things, on Celebrity Skin.





I love this song for many reasons. The darkly seductive riffs are quite PJ Harvey-esque; something Love many have added later as she has stated many times that she is a big fan of Harvey's. I just can't resist the simply beautiful line that Love rips apart 'WATCHING YOU BURN...AHH AHH.

The MTV unplugged version is pretty cool too.


Before I listened to Love's songs I had little to no respect for her. I believed the rumours. She was a drug addict, hung onto her husband's talent, was a failed feminist and all round bag of crazy. While some of those rumours may be true, well all of them are probably true to some extent, you can't deny she was, scratch that, IS talented. She is an admirable character. We could do with a few more girls like her ripping it up, flashing their knickers and generally not giving a fuck.

Hole- Best Sunday Dress

*MIXTAPE ALERT* Oh Kathleen you're always the B-side to my heart

You lucky bloggers are in for a treat since i've got a whole bunch of Kathleen Hanna's, of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre fame, B-sides and rareties which were mostly recorded during her time in Bikini Kill.

I'll warn you in advance 'Rockstar' and 'Heartbeat' are a bit weird. The Wondertwins were an experimental project who were Kathleen and Tim Green, from Ulysses I.O.U. It was recorded for the famous Embassy Tapes, which also feature Bratmobile's first recording, in Olympia during riot grrrl in 1991.

Hanna collaborated with Joan Jett for 'Go Home' and also featured on Atari Teenage Riot's 'No Success'. I'm not sure where 'Mr Magazine man' is from or who she is singing with, so if someone could help me that would be great, thanks.

Viva Knieval was one of Kathleen's first bands that she sang with. They released a limited EP, titled 'Boy Poison', toured America for a few months and then broke up.

Hanna was also a guest vocalist for the introduction on Green Day's 'Letterbomb' song for American Idiot. More recently her band Le Tigre, now defunct, collaborated with Yoko Ono for her new album 'Yes, I'm a Witch.'
