Corin Tucker Announces New Album

Ex Sleater-Kinney vocalist, Corin Tucker, has announced her second solo album, Kill My Blues will be out on 18 September.

Released via Kill Rock Stars Kill My Blues is said to see Tucker return to her "riot grrrl sonic roots". Now, we can't be entirely sure what that actually means or whether it'd just pr talk but it sounds pretty good.

On recording the album Tucker said: “After the past two years playing together, traveling and making music, I think we’re more comfortable. We collaborated on every song on this record and no one was shy about their ideas. I think you can hear that sense of joy and abandon in the songs.”

Tucker and her band have also announced tour dates for the American east coast. The Corin Tucker band includes Sara Luna (Unwound), Mike Clark (Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks), and Seth Lorinczi (Golden Bears).

There's not much out there on The Lookers and Sleater-Kinney supergroup Cadallaca. The group featured Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney fame, and owner of the best punk rock vocals in the world, and Sarah Dougher and sts from The Lookers.

For a long, long time all you could find on the internet about them was a sparse wikipedia page, a few interviews and exactly three poorly shot videos of them live.

Given the lack of Cadallaca we had access to back then it comes as a bit of a shock to find that a whole setlist of the band playing live has been uploaded to YouTube.

The can be seen playing artist Miranda July's party. On one video it says it's her birthday party and another claims it is her record release party. All we can know is that it's a party and an awesome one that got Cadallaca to play. The set is separated into two parts and is available to watch below.

Corin Tucker, former lead vocalist in everyone's favourite punk rock trio Sleater-Kinney, is releasing her debut album, 1,000 years, in October and has given us a sneak peak with the track 'Doubt'. It has all the warbling and riffage, is that a word, that we loved in Sleater-Kinney with added maturity.

Corin also talked about her love for Bikini Kill and why they were so important to girls when they first came out:

Even more than the records, the live experience of that band was so incredibly visceral. Like, I never didn't cry at their shows. Most of my friends and I would have tears streaming down our faces when they played those songs. It was a really intense time, and they were marking this space for women to say that we are these total natural forces to be reckoned with; we're sexual beings that are ready to battle for our own territory.

Who Are The Best Female Lyricists?

NME journalist, Emily Mackay started a blog questioning who were the greatest female lyricists of all time. She came to a justified decision and picked out Bjork, M.I.A, PJ Harvey, Kate Bush and Patti Smith.

I can't really disagree with her, I love every single one of them, but I have a few more I would add to the list:

Corin Tucker- Lead singer/howler of the inspirational band Sleater-Kinney, Corin generally wrote most of the lyrics and we're glad she did. Corin remained stridently political throughout her career and voiced her opinions in an intelligent and clear way.

Kim Deal- The famous bassist of the legendary Pixies, did anyone see them this October if so I'm jealous, is one of my favourite lyricists. She wrote one of the band's greatest songs, Gigantic, which was previously song of the month here. Kim's lyrics tend to not follow the rules and instead wander through the dark forests and magical landscapes of her mind.

Poly Styrene- This teenage punk was way ahead of her time when she started her band in the midst of the punk era. Avoiding the cliches that many fell into Poly sung about environmental issues, consumerism and the loss of identity.

Heavens To Betsy- Demo

This is a recording of Heavens To Betsy's first demo tape. Heavens To Betsy were made up of Tracey Sawyer and Corin Tucker (later of Sleater-Kinney fame). The group was born during the full rage of the riot grrrl scene in Portland in the early 90s.

The songs include the various themes that riot grrrl was interested in e.g. sexism, rape and domestic violence. Corin even mentioned in an interview that she based her vocal style, in the early days, on Kathleen Hanna's, of Bikini Kill fame, infamous scream.

The recording is from a cassette so the quality isn't too good but it's worth it to hear rare songs.

'Seek and Hide' and 'Good Food'- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
